Mitchell Crane's internal and external spline re-machining services bring worn splines back to original specifications through welding and precision machining, so mating parts fit the way they were designed to and hold up under load.

Splined Shaft Repair and Manufacturing

Splined shafts carry torque through jutting keys that mate with bearings, bores, bushings, and gears. Once those keys wear or fall out of alignment, the fit is lost, and the assembly is at risk. Our machinists can often re-spline a worn shaft back to operating condition. When a part is too far gone, we custom-manufacture a replacement to OEM specification.

What We Build Splined Shafts For

We use high-quality machines from Fellows, Gould & Eberhardt, and Lorenz, designed to produce custom spline shaft pieces for:

  • Bearings and bushings: Keys fit into paired bearings and bushings.

  • Gears: Splined shafts transfer torque to gears.
  • Pulleys: Splined shafts can be fixed to pulleys.
  • Rotor hubs: In aerospace, splined shafts mesh with grooves in the rotor hubs on propeller and rotor assemblies.

Repairs We Will and Will Not Make

Every part submitted for internal and external spline repair gets evaluated against the job it performs. Some components are not candidates, and we will say so.

  • Tell our staff exactly what the part does. Withholding that makes a safe evaluation impossible.
  • Mitchell Crane will not re-spline or repair certain hoist components and reserves the right to decline any repair that raises a safety concern.
  • When a repair isn't appropriate, we supply Mitchell Crane aftermarket crane parts or genuine factory originals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Internal & External Spline Re-Machining Services

Can my part be re-splined, or does it need to be replaced?

That depends on the part and the job it does in the assembly. Send us the details, and our machinists will evaluate whether the splines can come back to specification. If the shaft is otherwise sound, re-machining is almost always the cheaper path. If the component is critical enough that a repair would raise a safety concern, we will say so and quote a replacement instead.

Do you re-machine splines on equipment other than cranes?

Yes. We work on splined shafts for mining, oil and gas, construction, aerospace, rail, and power generation equipment. If it has an internal or external spline and we can hold the tolerance, bring it to us.

What do you need to quote internal and external spline repair?

Send the part number if you have one, the make and model of the equipment, photos of the wear, and a description of what the part does under load. That last piece matters most because it drives whether the repair is safe to make. Prints help, but are not required. We can reverse engineer the part itself
